Our most asked question answered - What pillow should I be using?

Posted on by Sleep Expert

Essential to a good night's sleep, your pillow should be supportive and comfortable. The most important element is ensuring it is the right height in relation to your body frame and mattress firmness to position your body in a way that puts your spine into a natural and healthy alignment.

Before choosing your pillow, fill preferences you will need to work out what type of sleeper you are:

The front sleeper
If this is your go-to sleeping position you'll certainly need a softer low profile pillow to allow your head to sink in line with your mattress and help prevent you arching your spine out of its natural alignment. This is the worst position to sleep in for your spine alignment so no matter what body size or mattress support you have, we’d always recommend a soft pillow.

The back sleeper
The most common sleeping position, we'd recommend a medium pillow to help support your head without propping it too far forward whilst keeping your neck and spine correctly aligned.

The side sleeper
If you're a side sleeper, you'll need a firmer, higher profile pillow that will offer height to support your head and neck allowing your spine to correctly align. It’s important to take into account your body size with this position – larger frame/wide shoulders will require a deeper firmer pillow whilst a smaller more petite body frame would require a medium pillow.

The combination sleeper
If you tend to move around in the night with no set sleeping position you'll be after a medium firmness. A pillow that is firm enough to support when on your back yet soft enough to allow you to sink into the mattress when on your front.

It’s worth noting that if you are a back, side or combination sleeper you will also need to take into account the softness of your mattress. The more your body sinks into your mattress, the lower the height of the pillow required.
