The Fill Factor

Posted on 04 / 10 / 2013 by Sleep Lover

We love the X factor here at The Fine Bedding Company H/Q and we also know that deciding which duvet fill to choose can be a bit of a minefield.

Are you a natural lover or does the technology behind the synthetic products turn you on? And then there’s the terminology to tackle – tog rating, loftiness and fill power.

So here’s  The Fine Bedding Company’s quick guide to the important ‘X factors’ for choosing duvet and pillow fillings.

Here’s A Smart Idea

Clever customers are now opting for Smartfil® – a unique, advanced fibre technology that’s available with many of our new products hitting stores this month and that will be available online very soon!

Smartfil® micro-fine fibres are so small that, in pillows they settle into even distribution around the head and neck, giving you incredible support, and in duvets allow for greater air circulation than ordinary fibres, offering greater warmth, softness, comfort and breathability. A Smartfil® duvet is actually even lighter than a high quality down duvet, non allergenic and can be washed at up to 60 degrees (40 degrees for our Smartfil® premium pillows).

Smartfil® features a unique siliconised coating, meaning its very resilient to washing so it will regain its quality, softness and loft (height/fluffiness) even after repeated washing.

Natural fillings are becoming increasingly unviable for allergy-suffers, the numbers of which increase year on year. Smartfil®, whilst performing like down, is non-allergenic and can be washed at the lowest temperature required to kill dust mites (60 degrees) in duvets, and 40 degrees in pillows.

As Nature Intended

Down is the name given to the soft clusters found on a breast of a goose or duck, and is the lightest of all natural fillings and has a unique ability to trap air, making it thermally efficient but also naturally breathable. Down has no quill and so is very soft.

Fill power refers to the quality of the down and feather content in a duvet.  The higher the fill power, the greater the loft (the height and fluffiness of a duvet or pillow filling), durability, insulation, and the lighter the weight of the duvet, offering total luxury.

Feather filled products generally have a heavier weight than down for that tucked in feeling, and a lower fill power as more feathers are required than down to achieve the same loft and warmth.
