Does your pillow need replacing?

If you’re suffering from sleepless nights, your pillow may be to blame. An old, worn pillow or one that does not suit your sleeping style can result in uncomfortable, interrupted sleep and sleepless nights.

A good pillow is a vital ingredient to a good night’s sleep. Your pillow cradles the head, and aligns your neck with your spine for comfort and support throughout the night – leaving you to wake up refreshed and ready to face the day.

If you think you might need a new pillow, ask yourself the following:

•      Do you suffer from aches and pains?
•      Do these tend to be worse in the morning, and ease off by the afternoon?
•      Do you toss and turn to try and find the right position for your head and neck on your pillow?
•      Have you had your pillow more than two years?
•      Is your pillow not as plump as it used to be, even when you ‘fluff’ the filling up?

If you’ve answered yes to two or more of these questions, your pillow may need replacing. Before you buy any new pillows, follow our simple guide to choosing the right pillow for you. You’ll have the perfect pillow for a comfortable, undisturbed night’s sleep in no time.

How to Choose a New Pillow

1. Decide which type of pillow filling is most suitable for you

Synthetic
Synthetic pillows are suitable for those who suffer with allergies, as the fillings used are non-allergenic. Pillows containing our advanced Smartfil® clusters offer enhanced support and retain their plumpness, even after repeated washing whilst also being exceptionally cushioning and highly breathable.

Specialist
If you have neck or back problems, a specialist pillow filling could have the answer. Revolutionary, temperature-sensitive memory foam pillows mould to the contours of your head and neck to aid correct alignment and posture, in addition to cradling the head and supporting the neck.

Natural
Natural pillows are ideal for those who prefer a natural place to rest their head. Feather fillings offer more firmness and support, while down has no quills making it extremely light and soft, offering medium-soft support. Natural-filled pillows are known for their excellent thermal and breathable qualities.

2. Establish your typical sleeping position
Not many people are aware of this, but the position you most frequently tend to sleep in affects what type of support and therefore what type of pillow best suits your needs. If you sleep on your back

Your neck and head need full but gentle support if you sleep on your back. Choose a medium pillow, such as Goose Feather & Down, Clusterfull or Spundown in ‘medium’.

If you sleep on your side
Without the correct support, your head will ‘flop’ into your pillow, potentially leading to aches and pains. Choose a firm pillow that offers full support, such as Boutique Silk, Breathe, or Spundown in ‘firm’.

If you sleep on your front
The weight of your head pushes down into the pillow, which ideally should be met with a cushioning softness. Choose a medium soft pillow for maximum comfort, such as the Platinum European Goose Down Pillow or the Goose Down pillow.

3. Do you have any specialist requirements?

Do you have any preferences when sleeping that might affect your choice in pillows? Or are there any other aspects of your life that you should take into account, such as allergies for example?

I suffer from allergies
The Spundown Pillow is washable at home at 60°C – the temperature that kills dustmites, which can help keep allergy symptoms at bay. It is available in both medium and firm support options.

I get too hot at night
The medium support Breathe pillow contains a unique blend of modal and advanced Smartfil® fibres, helping to wick away moisture and regulate body temperature to its optimum throughout the night. Alternatively, our Cool Touch pillow actually draws heat away from its source and disperses it into the sir when the optimum temperature has been reached. Pretty clever stuff!

I frequently read in bed
Our specially-designed Back Support V-shape Pillow has provided a solution to aching backs in bed whilst reading. The specialist V-shape supports and aligns the back, to keep you comfortable when reading in bed.
